Introducing RoxyAnn’s 2019 Tempranillo
The Excellence of Oregon Tempranillo & A Glimpse into RoxyAnn Winery
Oregon has long been celebrated for its diverse and thriving wine industry, with renowned varietals like Pinot Noir and Chardonnay sometimes stealing the limelight. However, a hidden gem in the heart of the state’s wine country has been emerging for the past few years: Oregon Tempranillo. This somewhat lesser-known grape variety, which has its origins in Spain, is flourishing in Oregon’s unique terroir, producing wines of exceptional quality and character. In this blog post, we will dive into the world of Oregon Tempranillo and, in particular, explore the history of RoxyAnn Winery in Medford, Oregon, and the remarkable qualities of our RoxyAnn Tempranillo.
The Rich History of RoxyAnn Winery
Nestled in the picturesque Rogue Valley of Southern Oregon, RoxyAnn Winery stands as a testament to the region’s rich winemaking history. The winery’s story begins in the mid-19th century when European immigrants recognized the incredible potential of the Rogue Valley’s fertile soil and ideal climate for grape cultivation. These pioneers planted the first vineyards in the area, laying the foundation for what would eventually become a thriving wine industry.
One of the key players in our history at RoxyAnn Winery is the visionary Jack Day, grandson of Reginald Parsons and father to current RoxyAnn owners, Chad Day and Crissie Olson. Jack recognized the grape-growing potential of the Hillcrest Orchard Estate due to its sloping hills, clay soils, and southern sunlight and in 1997, he oversaw the planting of the original 20 acres of vines on the southwest slopes of Roxy Ann Peak. RoxyAnn Winery was named after Roxy Ann Peak, a prominent local landmark visible from the vineyards. Jack’s dedication and innovative spirit breathed new life into the Rogue Valley’s viticultural scene and helped build the foundation for the Southern Oregon staple that RoxyAnn Winery would be come.
Today, we proudly stand as a renowned institution in Southern Oregon, known for our commitment to sustainable farming practices and producing wines that reflect our region’s unique terroir. We are exceptionally proud of our Tempranillo, which has garnered attention for its outstanding quality and the distinct characteristics imparted by the Rogue Valley’s microclimate and soils.
The Allure of RoxyAnn Tempranillo
Our RoxyAnn Winery Tempranillo is a shining example of the potential of this Spanish grape variety in the Oregon terroir. Here are some of the key qualities that make the 2019 RoxyAnn Tempranillo truly remarkable:
Expressive Of Unique Southern Oregon Terroir
The Rogue Valley’s diverse terroir, characterized by its volcanic soil, warm days, and cool nights, imparts a unique expression to the Tempranillo grapes. This results in wines that strike a harmonious balance between rich, fruity flavors and vibrant acidity.
Complex Flavor Profile
Our Oregon Tempranillo boasts a complex flavor profile that includes notes of ripe blackberries, cherries, and plums, intertwined with subtle hints of vanilla and spice. The extended growing season and meticulous winemaking process of our (dream) team here at RoxyAnn Winery ensure that these flavors are beautifully integrated.
Silky Tannins
One of the hallmarks of a great Tempranillo is its smooth and silky tannins. We believe our RoxyAnn Tempranillo excels in this aspect, providing a velvety mouthfeel that is both inviting and luxurious.
Aging Potential
While our RoxyAnn Tempranillo is delightful in its youth, it also exhibits the potential for graceful aging. The structured tannins and well-balanced acidity ensure that the wine can develop beautifully over several years, revealing even more complexity and depth.
Food-Friendly
Oregon Tempranillo is known for its versatility in food pairings, and our version is no exception. It complements a wide range of dishes, from grilled meats and hearty stews to vegetarian cuisine, making it an excellent choice for any meal.
